Abstract
Ladies on the Lot is an ethnographic study of women doing car sales. It finds that successful car saleswomen take on roles, that is, act a part in a script they create. The book analyzes these roles and how they function. It traces the careers of car saleswomen stage by stage. It investigates the stresses they experience and the gender role strain with which they cope. It uses rich description and is largely quotes from the women themselves about their work and lives. To improve readability, technical sociological analysis is separated from the text and appears in endnotes after each chapter.
