Abstract
Advances made between 1987 and 1990 in the application of paleomagnetic methods to problems in microplate tectonics and structural geology are discussed, with special attention given to the orogenic belts of North America. Results are presented from paleomagnetic studies of western Cordillera of North America, the Coast Plutonic Complex of British Columbia, the terranes of northern and southern California and Mexico, Rocky Mountain provinces, Appalachia, and the Caribbean region. The accumulated paleomagnetic evidence clearly indicates that movements of microplates and crustal blocks have played an integral role in the tectonic development of the regions considered.
