A Communications Terminal is an instrument by which a user communicates, through a network, with another user or with some service. It is a recent concept; an evolution, generalization, and synergism of the telephone set, video display terminal, and the television receiver.Communications Terminals are differentiated by: the services provided to the user through the terminal, the physical equipment, the user interface, the network interface, and the distribution of intelligence. The purposes of this paper are to categorize and review the state of the art in communications Terminals and to predict future directions.
