Abstract

The development of ISLAND, an Intelligent System for local Network Design, is described. Although the system is designed to have stand-alone capabilities foe most of the tasks involved in this design problem, it is intended primarily to work in a cooperative mode with a human user. The user need not be an expert in the domain, although the system provides useful aids even for experts. The interactive mode of the system involves a range of difficult problems including : 1. system explantation of its action and of domain concepts, 2. cooperation and communication between the various system components which each specialize in a particular area of domain expertise, and 3. sharing of control between the system and the user. The latter involves the ability to accept various depths of problem specification, user data specifications at various levels of detail, and user overrides of system actions.The system architecture provides useful handles for each of these issues and thus provides a useful general framework for many problems in intelligent workbench design and for some kinds of ICAI system as well. Unlike previous Expert System approaches to this problem, ISLAND does not deal only with the global attributes of a single LAN configuration. ISLAND deals also with large scale LAN problems involving several LAN configurations connected by bridges and gateways, and with the social, organizational, economic and political problems involved in developing a large scale LAN.
