Developments in processing multimedia and distributed documents are reviewed. The evolution of structured documents is traced leading to recommendations for additional levels of structure in the production of large multi-author documents. Large multi-author documents include documents such as training manuals, reference materials, and documentation. A model for a multi-author distributed document database is presented. The model focuses on the importance of multi-author interaction in the creation of a modular document that appears in final composition to be seamless. particular attention is paid to voice annotation, a capability to process information dynamically for inclusion in the file, issues in the management of documents in a network environment, and authoring and management control issues. A prototype of the control files and a system to manage multimedia documents created by groups of people is described.
