Abstract

User performance with OPACs: software for conceptually-based user instruction. Research has shown the importance of the user's mental model of interactive systems. Unless a conceptual model is presented, the user builds his or her own mental model of the system, often incomplete or inaccurate. Conceptually-based training is beneficial to users, and satisfaction is greatest among those who learn through structured presentations. An interactive computer tutorial gives conceptually based training in a structured presentation but lets users learn in their own. At the university of Toronto, conceptually-based tutorial software is being developed. it has text, graphics, sound, and animation components, and runs on the Macintosh SE30, using HyperCard(TM). The software provides generic OPAC training, but provides for the addition of local example modules to illustrate the principles taught. Six microcomputers set up in libraries at the University of Toronto provide user training, and research is being conducted to determine how successful the software is in achieving its goals.
