Abstract

This paper begins development of a theory of information retrieval based on the assumption of document space as an n-dimensional vector space, with queries and various reference points located in the space. The context is that the retrieval in response to a query is a subspace exhibiting a "uni-point convexity" property. It is assumed in this paper that each document, query, and reference point is a point in this space.Later papers will explore the more realistic assumption that these entities are relatively high dimensional subspaces, due to the lack of any specification on many of the vector components.
