Abstract

Despite rising concern about antimicrobial resistance, there is limited information on the appropriateness of antimicrobial prescriptions in patients who are discharged from the emergency department (ED). Lack of antimicrobial stewardship and appropriate follow up is a public health concern due to inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics resulting in microbial resistance and inadequately treated patients potentially spreading infectious diseases. Our objectives were to describe the prevalence of inappropriate antimicrobial follow up prescriptions, based on Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) or clinical guidelines, in discharged adult ED patients. These patients required follow up due to inadequate antimicrobial prescription and identify clinical factors associated with such prescription.
