Abstract
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have faced many challenges with regards to accessing and obtaining adequate healthcare services in the United States. Over the past three decades, several improvements have been made in addressing the needs of this population and improving the health status of people in it. This essay will evaluate the Developmental Disabilities Health Initiative, a project aimed at increasing access to primary care services for a group of individuals living with disabilities in the Washington, D.C. area. This program evaluation will also describe public health challenges and outcomes of people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the United States, analyze current steps taken to improve health outcomes of participating individuals, and compare a similar program and its successes. Future recommendations for the program will also be discussed.
