Abstract

Designed to help new library and information professionals make sense of the contemporary information world and devise effective strategies for developing their skills and services. Covers both professional and managerial aspects of library and information work, introducing key concepts and techniques in a coherent framework, and using practical examples to illustrate current organizational and service trends. Offers a global, cross-sectoral perspective on information resources and services, covering strategy and marketing, in addition to day-to-day operations. The thematic arrangement allows each chapter to be used as a self-directed training module and/or the basis of a discussion session with a supervisor or mentor. Activities and reflection points encourage a critical approach, and annotated reading lists facilitate access to relevant publications, websites, and organizations worldwide. Twelve chapters cover the service environment, strategic management, information sources, information services, information skills, information systems, people management, financial management, space management, service marketing, personal development, and professional activities.
