Abstract

Contribution to the 2003 second edition of the multi-volume Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science. Introduces the core concepts of strategic planning, describes the historical context of its development in academic libraries, and discusses contemporary approaches to library strategy at the start of the 21st century. Reviews published literature on the topic with reference to librarianship and management texts, and then examines current practice in the field, using real-world examples from the USA, UK, and Australia to illustrate key features. Covers planning processes, strategy documents, and key elements of strategic planning, including library missions, service values, strategic visioning, scenario development, goal statements, action planning, and financial commentary. (This article was drafted in 2001, and first published in 2003; it was then re-published in a later edition of the encyclopedia in its original form.)
