Abstract
Feature article introducing previews of the 2009 annual conference of the Society of College, National, and University Libraries (SCONUL), where the author was scheduled to speak on the competencies needed for hybrid and blended professional roles. Reviews the multi-faceted impact of technology developments on libraries and explains how information specialists in all sectors have to perform at higher levels and get more involved in the core work of their organizations, which means getting better at networking and gaining a deeper understanding of business issues to complement their specialist expertise and professional know-how. Concludes that workforce development will be a continuing, crucial requirement. Argues that all library staff will need a blend of professional, technical, organizational, managerial, interpersonal, and personal skills and knowledge; and advocates a mix of learning through work-based activities, taking time out for reflection, and moving in and out of formal education, including online courses, to stay current.
