[Review of the book] Collection development policies: Academic, public, and special libraries, by F. W. Hoffman & R. J. Wood.
Book Reviews.
Abstract
Reviews a new version of the authors’ 1996 book, Library Collection Development Policies: A Reference and Writers’ Handbook, which aims to provide comprehensive guidance to librarianship students and practitioners on collection development policies, by examining their key elements and rationale, using real-world examples as illustrations. Notes that only four of 84 examples are from outside North America, and none of the specialist libraries featured is from the private sector. Part 1 (26 chapters) deals with different elements of collection policies, while Part 2 (5 chapters) deals with policy components for electronic resources (“virtual collection development”), and recent issues not covered in the policies examined (big deals, embargoes, e-books, and digital rights management). The book includes a four-page bibliography, but its coverage of recent material is poor, and it includes several superseded editions; the index is similarly poor, omitting important concepts covered in the narrative (such as censorship and filtering). Concludes the text is a useful niche contribution, but it the outdated references reduce its academic value and professional credibility. Awards the text a score of 3 out of 5.
