Abstract

Unlike outdoor areas where the global positioning system dominates as the positioning technology of choice for navigation, indoor areas do not have a preferred positioning technology choice for navigation. In this chapter, we review some indoor positioning technologies, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID (radio-frequency identification), dead reckoning, and acoustic technologies for positioning in indoor areas. We describe these technologies and discuss their suitability for indoor navigation.
