Abstract

The University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh, in conjunction with the NISO working group and Plum Analytics, has created a plugin implementing the SUSHI-Lite protocol in Open Journal Systems. SUSHI-Lite, an acronym for Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative, enables aggregators of metrics and other data consumers to harvest article-level metadata and metrics. These data are currently available without sign-on when the plugin is enabled, allowing for open harvesting that creates a bridge between the journal and the metrics data providers. The end result is that any journal using OJS can expose their article- and journal-level metrics for reporting and analysis to any party that follows this open standard. This plugin has been implemented as a proof of concept in the 40 journals published by the ULS at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, the plugin is used to facilitate the harvesting of metrics data by Plum Analytics for display in a widget on abstract pages. However, the SUSHI-Lite protocol is an open standard and can be employed by any publishing platform or data harvesting system that uses the standard and can be implemented by any journal using OJS. Using SUSHI-Lite, OJS journals are able to expose metrics about their articles in a way that complies with industry standards, allowing for the broad sharing of data about alternative metrics. It is our hope that with this infrastructure in place, more usage data will be available about Open Access journals published using the most popular journal software in the world.
