Abstract
The results of Slovakia's elections were strikingly different from the rest of post-Communist Central Europe in two respects for much of the 1990s. It had the greatest difference between the first and second largest parties, Vladimír Mečiar’s HZDS party was 3.3 times larger than its next competitor. Even more significantly, the remaining votes showed the greatest dispersion of all the countries. Slovakia’s situation was not different because the majority of the adults preferred HZDS, they did not. What was different was the substantial dispersal of the remaining votes. Those who did not vote for HZDS did not lean to any detectable degree towards one alternative among the parties that campaigned against Mečiar.
