Abstract

The Law on the State Language of the Slovak Republic adopted in 1995 was mainly discussed in the context of its impact on Slovakia's Hungarian minority, but many of its articles addressed Slovak grammar and issues concerning linguistic correctness. Its wording also showed a blurring of the public and private spheres, an effort to preserve Czech as an acceptable language in bureaucratic and public communication in Slovakia, and no concern with the language of the media produced abroad and imported to Slovakia. The muted domestic reaction to the Law on the State Language, except the by Hungarian minority activists, indicates the high status linguistic correctness enjoys in Slovak society.
