Total joint arthroplasty as an ambulatory surgery: proof of concept.
In: Anesthesiology 2011.
Abstract
This study describes regional anesthesia and analgesia in the setting of minimally invasive total hip and knee arthroplasty and aggressive physical therapy. We found an increasing number of non-preselected patients are achieving hospital discharge within 24 hours of total joint arthroplasty, and identify a target population of those who may meet criteria, yet remain overnight to be discharged within 36 hours of the operation. The financial and public health burden implications of our findings are also discussed.
