(Unpublished)
Abstract
Among scholars and policymakers interested in global competition, the evolution of innovation capabilities in China is a hot topic. However, while significant research attention has been devoted to conventional topics such as patent productivity, the financing of innovation has received less attention. This field study will focus on one key element of innovation financing- Corporate Venture Capital (CVC), which is risk capital provided to innovative startups by established corporations. While CVC is an important driver of innovation in many contexts, it is especially relevant in China, whose corporate landscape is characterized by many large State-Owned Enterprises and a few large private corporations. Based on interviews with key CVC actors in China, this study will analyze the emergence and evolution of this crucial driver of future technological innovation.
