Abstract
Would That is a creative research project that entails a collection of hybrid creative writing which will include poetry, nonfiction prose, audio-visual work, and site-based installation. At its core is an oral history project which gathers narratives from within the Vietnamese diaspora, tracing not only the displacement of refugees after the end of the war in Vietnam in 1975, but also tracing how these stories have been passed down to the next generation, the second generations of Vietnamese who were born and reside outside of Vietnam. In many cases, these stories have not been passed down orally, but exist in silences, are caught in historic gaps between family members, as some refugees have been reticent or hesitant to look back. This project builds on previous creative work and research which explored the silences and roots of trauma from my own childhood to my parents' childhoods in the award-winning poetry collection, "Ghost Of," which wrestles in the aftermath of my younger brother's suicide at the age of twenty-four. Would That will significantly expand and extend my previous work and creative engagement as this Pitt Momentum Fund will enable me to complete primary research by enabling me to listen and tap into various diasporic communities across the U.S. including, but not limited to: San Jose (CA), Westminster (CA), Denver, Houston, and elsewhere.
