Abstract
Text of the address delivered to members of the newly formed Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professional (CILIP) by their inaugural president in October 2002. Discusses library and information services in the context of the wider environment, with a particular focus on the emergent concept of the ‘network society’ defined by sociologist Manuel Castells. Highlights three unmet challenges identified by Castells that are central to LIS: freedom, exclusion and education, with the expansion of information literacy as a key requirement. Reviews examples of professional achievements in this area so far; lists questions library and information professionals should ask themselves about the inclusive nature of their user base, content, services and staffing; and identifies strategic actions for CILIP related to external advocacy, internal organisation, membership structure and professional education, building on recent reports on national information policy, combating social exclusion, the knowledge-based economy and services for children and young people.
