Abstract

Contribution to an international survey of significant work in library and information science published in 1992. Reviews trends and developments in services provided by academic, public, national and special libraries and information units from a cross-sectoral perspective comparing and contrasting practices found in different library sectors. Key topics covered include the adoption of marketing principles and techniques; the development and management of fee-based services; the impact of CD-ROMs, networking and other technologies on service developments; strategies for the improvement of reference services; service provision for ethnic minorities and disadvantaged users; evolving perspectives and practices for developing information literacy; and emergent methods and models for service evaluation. Concludes that technological advances present significant challenges for library management but offer important opportunities for services to reach wider audiences. Argues more work is needed to improve evaluation methods and feedback mechanisms to ensure the relevance and value of services to communities and individuals.
