Abstract

Contribution to a commissioned collection of 21 autobiographical reflections of successful women in British librarianship, included in a group of five examples illustrating career mobility across different library sectors. Describes experiences working in backroom and frontline roles as a library assistant, assistant librarian, team leader, information specialist, research administrator, service head and library director in public libraries, a regional library system, special, national and university libraries, covering the 1970s to the 1990s. The account is organised under five headings: Career path: accident or design; Job satisfaction, motivation and goals; Professional development, networking and mentoring; and Opportunities for women in librarianship.
