On Time: Contemporary Video Art from China.
Doctoral Dissertation, University of Pittsburgh.
(Unpublished)
Abstract
It is largely accepted that contemporary Chinese video art first emerged in 1988. While visual artists in many parts of the world have turned to video as their major medium during the past three decades, distinctive forms of video art have emerged in China, becoming an important tendency within the burgeoning of contemporary art in that country. The following dissertation “On Time: Contemporary Video Art from China” centers upon the development of distinct Chinese temporalities, or Time Zones, shaped by ongoing socio-economic development and urban transformation since the establishment of the PRC in 1949 through the present. Emphasis is placed on video artists from China whose work and engagement with temporalities is deeply entangled with place-based particularities, transnational networks of connection, and profound globalizing ecological change. This dissertation will show that the emergence and maturation of video has been prompted by new ways of experiencing time within contemporary Chinese society. The following text centers upon the development of distinct temporalities within three regional “zones”: the Pearl River Delta, The Yangzi River region, and the industrial north. I am highlighting these areas as shaped by ongoing socio-economic development and urban transformation since the establishment of the PRC in 1949 through to the present.
