Abstract

Keyword guide to around a hundred important concepts in intellectual capital, social capital and social network theory, designed as one of two open access downloadable resources accompanying the book, The Social Future of Academic Libraries: New Perspectives on Communities, Networks, and Engagement (Facet Publishing, 2022). Intellectual capital and social network theories offer new ways of thinking about library resources, services and relationships that enable better alignment with institutional needs and have provided insights into many areas of professional practice, including service design, library leadership, liaison librarianship, learning spaces, information literacy, data services, and collection development. The conceptual landscape of intellectual and social capital is complex, pluralist and dynamic: the related literature reveals diverse perspectives, eclectic interpretations and continual development of new forms of capital to reflect changes and challenges in contemporary society. Definitions here are taken directly from the literature of the field using the words and phrases of their originators (authors or translators) to explain meanings and bring out nuances that distinguish alternative interpretations of the same concept. Includes cross-references and notes for related terms and variant terminology. The supporting list of 134 citations provides a select bibliography of classic and contemporary writing on the concepts and theories referenced.
