Abstract

This essay examines the impact of three process improvement projects aimed at eliminating barriers to drive efficient and effective operations in bettering physician satisfaction at a large mid-Atlantic healthcare system. Physician satisfaction is critical to achieving high-quality patient care, improved outcomes, and overall organizational efficiency. However, growing administrative burdens, a lack of resources, and increasing workloads have challenged the organization's ability to effectively manage its workforce's happiness. To improve aspects of its operations while targeting physician satisfaction, the organization embarked on three initiatives: the development of an evidence-based medical oncology staffing model, the implementation of a modernized medical transcription service, and the automation and expansion of the evaluation and management utilization benchmarking tool. Individually, these projects successfully achieved their targets, while collectively, their implementation correlated with decreased physician termination rates signaling improved satisfaction. These results reinforce the importance of ongoing improvement activities to drive value within the organization and the healthcare system as a whole.
