Abstract

The main objective of this research was to gain an understanding of sustainability and environmental practices within an emerging Latino community and explore the relationship between culture and environmental behavior. The research team used PhotoVoice to conduct this project, a participatory method of qualitative inquiry that centers the voice of marginalized populations. It uses photographs to catalyze discussions, stimulate ideas, and prompt interactions among participants who may be reluctant or not have the opportunity to otherwise voice their perspectives. For this project, participants took photographs to respond to the question, “What is environmental sustainability for the Latino community?” (in plain Spanish, “¿Qué quiere decir el cuidado del ambiente para la comunidad Latina?” or "¿Qué es la sostenibilidad ambiental para su comunidad?”). During a series of meetings, participants discussed the pictures, their meanings, and implications; initiated analysis; and decided what pictures to exhibit publicly in community and academic venues. Based on the photos and participant discussions, six emerging themes arose: recycling and reuse, education, resources, trash, community, and protection of the environment. The results illustrated that the Latino community does actively engage in sustainability efforts, but that information about sustainable practices is not widely available to Latino residents of Pittsburgh. To address this, participants requested a resource guide pertaining to different sustainable resources in Allegheny County.
