Abstract

Introduction: Many factors influence the bond failure rate of brackets including malocclusion. It has been shown that bracket failure rates increase with increased overbite. An increased bracket failure rate poses problems including increasing treatment time. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the use of bite turbos in deep overbite cases decreases the rate of bracket failures. Methods: A retrospective chart study was performed with 36 mandibular incisor brackets enrolled in a bite turbo group and another 36 mandibular incisor brackets in a non-bite turbo group. Each chart was evaluated for 6 months from bonding of mandibular fixed appliances for instances of bracket failure. Instances of bracket failure, presence or absence of bite turbos, and tooth location were recorded. We tested the hypothesis that the bite turbo group would experience a lower bracket failure rate. A chi-square test was used to compare the bracket failure rate between the bite turbo and non-bite turbo groups. Results: The non-bite turbo group had an 11% failure rate (4/18) whereas the bite turbo group had a 6% failure rate (2/18). The difference in failure rate was not statistically significant (p=0.39). Conclusions: The use of bite turbos in deep overbite cases does not affect the mandibular incisors bracket failure rate. However, due to the small sample size of this study, more research is needed to validate this finding.
