Review of Literature on Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections in Catheter-Dependent Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.
Master Essay, University of Pittsburgh.
Abstract
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) present a substantial health risk to hemodialysis-dependent individuals relying on catheters, prompting this comprehensive examination of infection prevention strategies for these patients. This literature review describes the frequency of CLABSIs within this patient population, assesses different interventions aimed at reducing CLABSIs, and scrutinizes data correlating biofilm and catheter colonization with CLABSI risk. Employing the Ovid Medline database, a thorough screening process identified 82 records, with 42 titles and abstracts excluded for not meeting inclusion criteria. Subsequently, 40 articles underwent full-text review, resulting in the exclusion of 35 articles and the inclusion of 5 papers for the literature review. Additionally, two independently identified papers augmented the total number of papers included to 7. This review emphasizes the necessity of embracing a holistic, evidence-based approach to alleviate the public health burden associated with CLABSIs in catheter-dependent patients undergoing hemodialysis.
