Abstract

The stress of disease during a time that should be dedicated to creating life is a tremendous burden for an individual, let alone, a whole population to carry. Allegheny County is home to over 1.2 million people with 51.1% being female. The leading cause of death amongst pregnant individuals is one related to cardiovascular disease. With UPMC and Allegheny Health Network as the major hospital systems in Western Pennsylvania, there is not an existing program that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of the condition coinciding with the stages of pregnancy, during labor and delivery, and into the postpartum period.
Primary prevention is a crucial form of intervention that avoids the disease before it even occurs. This is difficult because there are so many factors at play, most of which rely on behavioral actions. However, to reduce the national mortality rate of this population it is crucial that, as a healthcare system, they are prepared for every situation and are ready to be utilized as a resource, to provide substantial information to their patient, as preventable measures, for a smoother delivery and a healthier recovery. It is imperative that development of a new program is established, or necessary changes are made to existing programs to address these concerns to reduce the mortality rate overall.
