All About the Process: Intersections of Student Engagement, Creativity, and Learning.
In: Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia ACRL Chapter Spring Conference, 14 June 2024 - 14 June 2024, Slippery Rock, PA.
Abstract
The Text&conText Lab at the University of Pittsburgh is the result of a partnership between the University Library System and the Center for Creativity. This space within the Hillman Library provides an active environment to experience the book as a physical object. This session will explore relationships between all aspects of book arts and experiential learning within the context of a library. By emphasizing hands-on engagement, collaborative projects, and the integration of historical and contemporary techniques, the lab facilitators support students from a variety of academic disciplines in participating in process-oriented learning, honing skills such as critical thinking and problem solving along the way. The presenters will showcase how bookbinding, papermaking, and typesetting (through examples and demonstrations) extend beyond artistic expression to become powerful vehicles for education and student engagement, and how the Text & conText Lab embodies another way to learn, in alignment with the mission of libraries.
