Abstract
A fundamental change has taken place with respect to the relationship of standards and product development in information technology markets - standards are now frequently preceding products. This change is illustrated by examining a chronology of modem products and standards from 1950 to 1987. One important implication of this trend is a new approach to product development. A firm has several strategies that it can adopt to complete in these markets and in the standards committees. A set of such strategies are presented and discussed in light of the modem chronology. © 1991.
