Abstract

This dissertation is a comparative examination of households, focusing on domestic servants in works of fiction by the Argentine writer Silvina Ocampo; the Mexican Elena Garro; and the Brazilian Clarice Lispector. Servant figures, I argue, understood as dependents on the surface, hold a surprising “secret power” hidden in their apparent invisibility. From an interdisciplinary approach that includes notions of power, practices of everyday life, and the distribution of the sensible, I sustain that these authors’ singular poetic and literary styles surprisingly converge in their representations of the weak as potential agents of change. I dedicate three chapters to closely examining strategies and resources to create servant characters in the literary works. In the chapter devoted to Silvina Ocampo’s works, I trace an arc that discovers a pattern in the way she portrays servants through time. The following chapter focuses on the contrast between one of Clarice Lispector’s novel and some of her chronicles. The fictional maid in A Paixão Segundo G.H is so disquieting to the narrator and owner of the house that it leads her to reveal her deepest anxieties about her own self. On the contrary, holding the mask of her own name, she chronicles her portraits of her own real maids, who are far more traditional and conservative. Fictional servants in Garro’s early narrative are several and various. Because of this plurality, I group them into passive and active characters, explaining each particular function in detail. Finally, my boldest argument is a deeper analogy between these representations and how these female writers found their own room to make singular authorial voices heard in a male literary environment.
