Abstract

This study seeks to carry out the identification, reading and comparison of the subject and form taken by delusion as an aesthetic trend in recent Colombian narrative. To do this I will focus on four novels published during the first decade of this century: Bello animal (2002) by Fanny Buitrago; Delirio (2004) by Laura Restrepo Casabianca; Los ejércitos (2006) by Evelio José Rosero Diago; and Tres ataúdes blancos (2010) by Antonio Ungar. The totality of the literary work of each of the selected authors will serve as a second informational level on the autonomous aesthetics and personal journeys of each, but the social significance of these four novels can be argued if they are regarded as a corpus and not as individual works.
From a recovery of the discussion of realism as a literary genre that is renewed for Latin America after the explosion of the avant-garde, I aim to generate a positive category for describing a specific context, that is, to update the notion of realism in its contemporary aspect —current and simultaneous to the social context that produces it— to make it functional to the reality that is sought to intervene.
Thus, I establish from the beginning some of the basic premises that guide the reading of the novels: first, that realism is an always current genre, “fresco de época” (Horne), and a discourse that reveals the systems of classification and signifying practices of a definite society. Second, that the fictions chosen to form the corpus use the referents of the troubled reality that produces them with the intent of redistributing the symbolic loads of the conflict. And third, that being manifestations of “contemporary realism,” these novels neutralize the question of the origin of the violence, in this case, in Colombia, and come to model a difficult experience that otherwise would remain indiscernible.
These, and other premises that will be constructed, clarified and functionalized throughout the study, acquired importance as a critical complement to reading contemporary Colombian narrative; they help to characterize and delineate of aesthetic criteria and formal strategies that this narrative seems to drive or ambition.
