Abstract

It is likely that you’ve encountered the term “open access,” whether you have seen it on ETD forms, while preparing a publication in a journal, on grant applications, while looking for academic jobs, or during events on campus. Open Access refers to a movement of scholars to share the products of their research with anyone (not just those who can afford expensive journal subscriptions) for both personal and global benefit. Many universities, institutions, governments, and funders now mandate Open Access, which means that familiarity with Open Access is a valuable skill for academics and researchers of all types. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of Open Access and explore ways that Open Access can help you in all aspects of your career. Being Open is not just about publishing, but also about a set of tools that are available to scholars to enhance their scholarly presence online, promote their research, and engage with the research community. We will explore a subset of tools that help scholars be Open and share their work while simultaneously developing a robust scholarly profile. These tools will give users an edge when applying for grants, searching for collaborators, and applying for jobs. We will cover the following topics and tools: Open Access publishing, openly archiving your scholarly work using D-Scholarship, author rights, SHERPA/RoMEO, ORCID profiles, FigShare and SlideShare, ImpactStory, and brief forays into scholarly social networking on Academia.edu, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops or mobile devices to explore these tools on their own during the workshop.
