Abstract

Laniakea, for pipa, horn in f, double bass, piano, and laptop is a 22 minute original musical composition. The present paper will explore its key concerns, which includes composing within a complex set of logistics, writing for an unusual ensemble, and programming computer software for the purpose of real-time performance. This paper will also provide an aesthetic context for the work by exploring its influences and how they relate to the formal structure. It will then engage in an analysis of the rhythm and pitch derivation, and finally, explore the relationship between the acoustic ensemble and electronics.
