Abstract

A key trend in information literacy (IL) practice is the shift in from an operational to a strategic focus, evident in the number of institutions that have developed formal strategies and frameworks for IL programs or incorporated formal objectives for IL in other institution-wide strategies, such as learning and teaching or employability strategies. However, IL strategy development is still relatively immature, and there are few examples where the analytical tools and techniques routinely used in corporate strategy and for strategic planning in the public sector have been applied to IL, even though such tools are widely used in the library and information services sector. This poster draws on work carried out with practitioners from university and college libraries in different European countries, which involved the use of strategic management concepts and techniques in the development of IL strategies. It illustrates the use of a Strategy Map based on the Balanced Scorecard model to provide a rich graphical overview of a university IL strategy incorporating many elements found in corporate strategy documentation, including strategic performance indicators. It demonstrates how the application of contemporary strategic management tools can enhance the content and presentation of IL strategies.
