Abstract

SCONUL is a membership organisation of 157 college, university, and national library and information services in the UK and Ireland. In 1998, SCONUL published its vision of the academic library in the year 2002, to capture and highlight key themes of relevance to members, and inform strategy and planning at national and institutional levels. During summer 2000, members decided that the pace of change required a new vision to reflect the political, economic, social and technological forces affecting our services. Following the same process as before we formed a small group, broadly representative of our membership, to develop a new statement as the basis for dialogue with stakeholders. The vision statement begins with the set of planning assumptions formulated by the group, and concludes with a list of action points for SCONUL. For both the assumptions and vision, significant changes from the last statement are highlighted in the relevant introductory paragraphs. Key themes include the development of web portals for students and faculty, establishment of formal partnerships within and beyond the sector, more effort on institutional security policies and unified authentication systems, the role of information specialists as advisors and trainers, and a focus on present and future user needs.
