Abstract

Reviews the second edition of a 1989 manual on change management for librarians. A significant addition is a set of 15 “change scenarios,” intended as discussion points or coaching prompts for teaching or training sessions. The scenarios cover academic and public libraries, but include only one example based in a special library; and while they include a few classic strategic issues (dealing with budget cuts, turning round poorly performing organizations), they omit many common contemporary challenges, such as introducing new technology, relocating a service, and merging separate units, concentrating instead on micro-level issues involving behavioural problems and interpersonal conflicts. Other weaknesses for professional education include a failure to reference change management theories and models from the literature, or reflect current thinking on the subject, which has moved away from seeing change as an orderly, linear process with a defined end-point, as suggested by the step-by-step model presented. However, the book contains useful advice on forming a change task force, analysing resistance to change, and the need to evaluate the process. Awards it a score of 3 out of 5.
