Abstract

Contrary to what many still believe, global warming is a serious issue that demands answers now. One effective, and rather simple, method to combat climate change is to recycle. Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions as well as the total amount of waste disposed. Unfortunately, the amount of waste being thrown away is increasing, but recycling is not. Due to new political circumstances, one being that the new head of Environmental Protection Agency is a climate change denialist, environmental responsibilities will shift to local governments and communities. An area of recycling innovation revolves around polyurethane foam, a low density, high volume material that makes its way into landfills and oceans around the world. This essay takes a comprehensive look at public health significance of polyurethane foam, its effects on the environment and promising mitigations.
