Abstract

Library engagement with data has evolved from specialized social science and geospatial data services through growing involvement in research data management and ancillary activities to a situation where data has moved from the periphery to become the new center of gravity with staff using data visualization and learning analytics in library assessment as well as using linked open data to enrich catalogs and collections. Libraries are also helping their communities engage with and manage data in their everyday lives, but there are new challenges on the horizon including very large-scale collaborative research projects based on public participation and sharing of personal health and related data that raise ethical, legal and policy issues. Information professionals can transfer emergent data roles and competencies to the world of big data 2.0 and serve their institutions and communities by acting as data ethics advisors, data literacy educators, digital curation consultants, and interdisciplinary research facilitators. Information specialists have a responsibility to engage with big data megaprojects to provide a human centered perspective and to protect the rights and welfare of community members, by acting as the conscience of the big data world.
