Abstract

"As a costume designer and director in academia and professional theatre, I have seen a rise in the production of plays that contain scenes of heightened sex and violence. These plays are produced by academic and professional theatres often without any guidance or training on the best practices to staging the scenes that contain intimacy and violence. The prevention of sexual misconduct boils down to consent and a shift in the culture of seeking and asking for consent.

The rise of the role of the intimacy director and intimacy training addresses the best practices in staging these heightened moments with given consent. Intimacy direction provides a foundation of safety and a framework for creative partnership. These practices give the actors the guidelines and tools that are needed to create a space where all parties feel safe and supported.

Unknowingly, and often unreported sexual assault and violence can happen with untrained actors, professionals and theatrical academics when staging scenes of heightened physicality. The University of Pittsburgh's Title IX office is often overlooked on the Pitt campus as a resource to report sexual misconduct and assault. Part of the work of the Intimacy Director in academia is to be aware of these resources and personnel for students and teaching professionals to use in times of need.

For this proposal, I am seeking funding to support training in Intimacy Directing for use in Pitt's Theatre Arts department classes, departmental productions and the greater Pittsburgh Theatre Arts community. I believe that my training in this work will support Pitt's efforts to prevent sexual misconduct and promote awareness of the resources and tools that are available to help students protect themselves, seek out the proper resources and offices that the University provides."
