AbstractIt took firsthand experience with a Zoom instruction session falling off the rails for me to fully realize that how I approach instruction needs to change. I realized that my usual methods for engaging with students did not translate to Zoom. I found myself scrambling to engage students with the content of my lesson and trying to learn new ways to motivate students, all while teaching virtually. As instructional librarians we are typically given “one shot” to teach students who we often do not know well, in a virtual environment that hinders social interactions. In this context, how can we increase student engagement and motivation? I propose that by informally assessing student knowledge through “checks for understanding” and providing feedback, we can increase student confidence and engagement. This session is intended to cover a variety of classroom assessment techniques and propose how they can be adapted to business instruction to increase student confidence and engagement during online instruction sessions.
