Abstract

Opening chapter of a book that argues changes in local communities, national policies and the global economy have transformed the operating environment of higher education
and created a different social context for academic libraries that demands radical rethinking of professional practices and service philosophies. Provides a multidisciplinary survey of ideas, concepts and theories shaping the way individuals, groups and organizations are behaving, interacting and relating to others in their personal, social and professional lives, thus illustrating the “social turn” of the 21st century. Key themes include the culture of participation and online communities, exemplified by disruptive practices such as user-generated content, problem-solving via crowdsourcing, and “working out loud”; the development of participative practices in professional domains, such as citizen journalism, participatory medicine, open science, and Library 2.0; expanded understandings of the social roles, responsibilities, and relationships of business corporations that prioritize sustainable development and global citizenship; and the concomitant reframing of capitalism, moving from the traditional mono-capitalist focus on economic capital to multi-capitalist frameworks for management and reporting that bring in natural, human and social capital. The blurring of boundaries between users and producers, laypeople and experts, personal and professional, non-profit and for-profit is a common thread throughout the narrative
