Abstract

Presents revised and expanded versions of models developed to help library and information professionals make sense of challenges and opportunities in the changing digital landscape, with a focus on the management of research data. The models have been designed to provide a graphic overview of current thinking and emerging practice related to trends in the service environment, areas of library engagement, blends of competencies, and the types of roles and partnerships needed for effective data management. The six models cover: service trends in the network world, where information professionals are expected to deliver more functional comprehensiveness at higher technical capacity; blended professionals, showing how hybrid specialist roles have emerged at the boundaries of established professions; the data management pyramid for libraries, identifying priority areas for library engagement; collaborative service development, suggesting areas where libraries should lead and where they should seek partners; professional competence, identifying six skillsets for the information services workforce in the knowledge economy, articulated as concentric circles combining core competence, survival skills and essential enablers; and a skills profile indicating how knowledge and skills requirements may vary for different specialist roles.
