Abstract
The United Nations has recognized Internet access as a basic human right. However, Internet access is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for public access to information. Information literacy (already recognized as a human right) is an essential prerequisite for access to be useful, meaningful, and productive. Furthermore, information literacy education must focus on data literacy as the key competence for the connected data society of the 21st century, and education for data literacy requires a collaborative lifewide approach to enable and empower people to interact with data competently and confidently in their academic, professional, civic, social, and personal lives.
