Abstract
Refugee and immigrants students and families have many skills and knowledges to contribute to our shared world. However, there are also many challenges that accompany living in a new place, such as navigating a new educational system. This project aims to partner with refugee youth and families to think about the kinds of educational experiences that would help to meet their needs and interests. We focus in particular on arts education because of its continually shrinking role in public schooling.
The aims of the project is to engage students as co-researchers who 1) develop research questions, 2) carry out research, 3) analyze the data, 4) generate recommendations that can be shared with others.
We engage as co-researchers the youth steering committee composed of 15 students that are part of ARYSE (Alliance for Refugee Youth Support and Education). This partnership will allow us to better understand their educational needs and interests, the current role of arts education in and out of schools, and the ways in which refugee youth perceive arts education contributing to their ability to live well.
