Abstract

In this analysis, I argue that we can find formal micro-structures in The Difficulty of Crossing a Field, by David Lang, which create functional macro-level events. These structures differ from one another, while the treatment of repetition also differs. I will specifically focus on melodic repetition in the vocal line. After identifying types of repetitions, I show the morphology of the different kinds of repetition, how these differences operate and the structural implications in the musical/dramatic setting of Lang’s opera. I found that only a few types of repetition are important for the larger constructions of the work, and each type can function as a moment of relative statis or dynamic flow, something—broadly speaking—similar to aria and recitative in traditional opera.
My original composition, The Sound of Migration, for clarinet, viola, voice, chorus of actors, and electronics is the second part of my dissertation. As an Italian who has lived in the United States and currently Mexico, I am interested in representing the global phenomenon of migration, without focusing on just one manifestation of it. In general, I am interested in using music, particularly vocal music, as an effective way of communicating social issues. In this work, I use sampled and concrete sounds from recordings, TV news, and recorded readings, which I digitally manipulated and treated with the technique of collage.
