Do musical ability/experience and working memory updating play a role in second language morphosyntax learning? A self-paced reading study.
Master's Thesis, University of Pittsburgh.
(Unpublished)
Abstract
The differences that create variability in second-language (L2) acquisition of grammar have been extensively studied, both at the linguistic and the individual level. The present study built on this body of research by examining individuals’ musical training and ability in conjunction with working memory updating differences to see whether these had any contribution to the beginning stages of learning complex L2 morphosyntax. Through a language training and self-paced reading paradigm, the present study examined the role of musical ability/experience and working memory updating in L2 morphosyntax learning in online and offline processing. The results suggest a positive relationship between musical ability/experience, working memory updating, and online and offline processing of L2 morphosyntax. Learners with higher musical ability/experience and higher working memory updating abilities showed evidence of online sensitivity of grammatical violations as well as more offline sensitivity to particularly challenging grammatical constructions relative to their lower musical ability/experience and lower working memory updating counterparts. Implications of this research are discussed through the lens of the Unified Competition Model (MacWhinney, 2005) and individual difference findings of L2 morphosyntax learning.
