Abstract
Second of three reviews of trends and developments influencing the social future of academic libraries, building on the author’s global survey of the “social turn” in communities, professions and the economy. Concentrates on the evolving social roles of higher education institutions in the 21st century, particularly the challenges arising from the progressive shift from an elite national system to a global mass market and the integration of a “third mission” foregrounding their contributions to the knowledge economy and civil society, represented by academic entrepreneurship and commercialization on one side and community engagement and participation on the other. Key themes include the contested concept of graduate employability; expansion and diversification of student support; broadening and deepening of academic curricula; continual renegotiation of relationships with students; the global movement to decolonize higher education; and the use of social capital perspectives to investigate and enhance the experiences of students from minority groups at various stages of the higher education lifecycle. Recent scholarship has introduced alternative multi-capital frameworks that offer a more nuanced understanding of the role of personal and institutional resources, networks and relationships in facilitating the social integration, academic success and professional employment of both traditional and non-traditional students in higher education.
